Can You Put a Dishwasher Next To An Oven: Kitchen Decor Answers Now

Installing a new dishwasher is a fantastic way to upgrade your kitchen; however, there are always design concerns. Can you put a dishwasher next to an oven? Heat is always an issue, regardless of what sits beside your oven, and having enough space for heat to dissipate properly is one vital concern. Overlooking a small thing, like the gap between your oven and other appliances, is a costly mistake. Fortunately, I have remodeled plenty of kitchens over the years, and I’m happy to provide you with the details so you can safely add that dishwasher wherever you like. Setting anything next to an oven is a matter of making certain that the warmth has somewhere to go. All you need is proper spacing, and for ovens and dishwashers, which means at least twenty-four inches.

Can you put a dishwasher next to an oven? You cannot put a dishwasher directly beside an oven. At a minimum, you must have at least two feet of space between your oven and a dishwasher for safety reasons. The space between appliances gives heat a chance to dissipate safely. Hence, you can avoid melting or damaging your dishwasher over time.

Is It A Good Design Feature To Install A Dishwasher Close To An Oven

We all know water and fire don’t mix, and in a kitchen, that means you should not put the dishwasher next to the oven. Generally, these two appliances are placed much further apart for common sense and design reasons. Although you can put them beside each other, that doesn’t make it a good plan, nor an aesthetic one. Most designers recommend that the work area for washing dishes should be opposite the stove for practical safety reasons.

Additionally, there are other reasons to avoid placing these two appliances too close. For one thing, used, dirty dishes are going into that washer. Food particles can cross-contaminate the meals you are preparing, causing you to get sick and ruin your foods’ flavor.

Furthermore, some dishes may be wet from pre-rinsing or simply sitting inside the sink. Water on a stove should only be clean and inside cookware or a kettle. Splashing even a few drops into the hot oil, for example, can cause a greasy explosion that burns skin and makes huge messes.

Can You Put a Washing Machine Next to an Oven

Like a dishwasher and other large appliances, you can put a washing machine near an oven, but not next to it. It is crucial to leave adequate space between the two. Otherwise, you risk heat damage over time and could end up spending hundreds of dollars replacing your high-end appliances.

Typically the safe distance is five centimeters. However, in the case of dirty laundry, you may want to reconsider. Fabrics are flammable and equally important, they are dirty when they go into the machine. That is not a good combination to place near an oven. If you have another place to put the washer, choose that instead.

Can You Add a Heat Shield Between a Stove and a Dishwasher

Although you should not put a dishwasher next to a stove, you technically can if you leave enough space. Sensibly, this is the rule of thumb to prevent heat and steam damage and other unnecessary risks. However, in some spaces, you have little choice, and naturally, that means finding other solutions.

You can add a heat shield between the stove and dishwasher to help minimize one of the risks. Doing this will not solve all the problems with this design. Still, it’s a good start when you don’t have other options for your kitchen layout. Sadly, this does not minimize the need for two feet of space. It just helps reduce any heat transference.

Start by choosing a smaller dishwasher to maximize the space between the two appliances. Measure your space and the dimensions of both appliances. You will need to choose a heat shield attached to the wall, floor, and whatever else you put in the gap between the two machines. Often this will be a countertop or a small cabinet since so much space is necessary.

An EdgeStar Energy Star Rated Built-In Dishwasher is excellent for smaller kitchens. This eighteen-inch dishwasher holds eight place settings, which is more than enough for most small families, and it takes up less space, so you have room for everything you need in the kitchen. With six different wash cycles and a leakage sensor that automatically shuts off if there are any issues, your dishes will get wet, but the floor won’t. Best of all, the quiet fifty-two-decibel operation won’t drown out conversations in the kitchen. Have Amazon deliver an EdgeStar to your door when you click here.

Additionally, you may want to add some sound deadening material on the dishwasher side. Choosing a high-quality and low volume dishwasher will help, but most still tend to make a distracting level of noise. You can attach your sound deadener to the heat shield and place both when you do the installation.

Can You Put a Dishwasher Next to a Fridge

Like an oven, you can technically place a dishwasher next to your fridge, but it’s a terrible idea. Putting the fridge or freezer next to an appliance that creates heat is not only a bad design, but it will cost you quite literally. This is the least energy-efficient pair other than placing the fridge beside the oven.

Typically dishwashers need to be located near a sink so they can share a water line. However, some refrigerators that produce ice also have water lines, making sense to wonder if the two are a natural pairing. Plumbing issues aside, these two appliances couldn’t be more different, and they will work actively against each other if you put them nearby.

Not only will heat from the dishwasher warm the fridge, but the cold fridge will also interfere with the heat in your dishwasher. Ultimately this will cause both appliances to work hard to maintain normal functions. This means both will burn out faster, plus it will raise your energy bill substantially over time.

Dishwashers often have a sterilization setting, which can be crucial for baby bottles and dishes used by ill people. However, placing a cold object like the fridge beside the appliance can contribute to uneven heating. Likewise, a hot appliance beside a fridge will mess with the way it cools food.

Improperly stored and cooled foods will go off faster. Unfortunately, this type of kitchen layout could cost you replacement foods or even lead to food poisoning. Just because something is technically allowed does not mean it is a good idea.

Can You Install a Wall-Oven Over a Dishwasher

You cannot put a dishwasher next to or under a wall oven. The steam from your dishwasher should not vent up toward a wall oven. Regrettably, this is not a safe option. You will still need at least two feet of horizontal space between the appliances, and being directly above doesn’t give you the distance you need.

According to findanyanswer, “A dishwasher can be installed next to a free-standing, slide-in, or drop-in range as long as there is at least 2″ of clearance between the two appliances. A dishwasher should not be installed directly next to a wall oven…” Whether it is at a lower elevation, you cannot put these two appliances so close to one another. They also note that you cannot put an oven beside the refrigerator.

Save space for your oven with a Danby 18 Inch Built-in Dishwasher. This low-water-use, Energy Star rated dishwasher is great for your kitchen and our planet. When designing or refurbishing a kitchen, it is important to keep your cooking and washing appliances as far apart as possible. Ideally, they would be across the room or several yards away on the same wall if you have a large kitchen.

Final Thoughts

You can put your dishwasher wherever you want in your kitchen, provided there is enough space. The gap between an oven and other appliances is there to give heat a place to go other than directly into the side of your dishwasher. By measuring and leaving enough space, you will avoid having to replace the dishwasher.

In addition to a gap, you can always place a heat barrier to help prevent problems. A little extra planning and caution are all it takes to have the kitchen of your dreams or fit the dishwasher where you have space. Make sure you always measure twice and check your dishwasher dimensions before you buy it to fit in.

No one wants a melted dishwasher. Fortunately, now you know what you need to install it beside your oven safely.
